Port Ranir
Ranir is a small desert world and formally a colony of Kailaluset. It had one principal settlement, Port Ranir, built, as the name suggests, around the space port, a handful of small to medium towns, and scattered smaller settlements. Most human habitation is concentrated in the northern uplands, where the climate is marginally milder.

The wold is in full revolt against Kailaluset, a conflict known as the War of Secession (see the Kailaluset world entry for more details). Whilst occupying forces hold Port Ranir - which is effectively under martial law -  the rest of the planet is effectively free, and The Port (as it is locally referred to) under siege. In fact the Liberation Forces of Ranir (LFR) are increasingly well organised and operate throughout the system maintaining supply bases in the local asteroid cluster. They have engaged in an increasingly successful campaign of economic warfare, attacking supply vessels in orbit, refuelling in the systems gas giant, and even, in 2873, mounted a raid on Kailaluset itself. Hostilities have escalated considerably in the last two years, with LFR forces increasingly well equipped, leading to the suspicion that outside agencies are supporting the uprising, though nothing has so far been proved, and the LFR deny this. The heavy involvement of Kailaluset and, potentially, other external agencies leads to ambiguity of what the world's tech level actually is, but the current rating of A represents the average level of the admittedly wide variety of technology liable to be encountered.

The Kailaluset authorities have established a 'Scout Base' on one of Ranir's two moons, effectively a military squadron, in an attempt to protect supply shipments into Port Ranir, and space skirmishes are increasingly common.

NOTES TO TRAVELLERS:
The conflict means that the Fairport Convention's Terms of Trade Authority (TTA) has classified this world as Amber, and travel here should be avoided if possible. However the recent escalations mean that this world is liable to be re-classifed as red at the next TTA review.
